The drill will include the following:
- Guided Reading Activity on A.L.I.C.E. (Grades PK-5)
- Informational video on A.L.I.C.E (Grades 6-12)
- Student drill focused on sheltering in place and locking out all intruders
- Time for students to give feedback and submit questions.
The A.L.I.C.E active shooter civilian response training is used in more than 4,000 K-12 schools nationwide, as well as colleges, hospitals, libraries, churches, businesses and government agencies. More than 4,000 police agencies are trained in the protocol, including the Carlisle Police Department.
The A.L.I.C.E protocol teaches staff and students additional response options:
Alert Clear, concise language to convey the type and location of the event.
Lockdown We will continue to lock down students when it is the best option.
Inform Communication allows for good decision-making.
Counter Apply skills to distract, confuse and gain control.
Evacuate Get out! Put distance between you and the intruder.
In short, when faced with an armed intruder invading our secure area, we will use the A.L.I.C.E. approach to:
- Listen carefully to the location and type of event.
- Get to and/or remain in a secure area until it is safe to evacuate.
- Apply skills to distract, confuse and gain control should an armed intruder enter the area.
- Evacuate as soon as it is safe.
In No Way are we asking or teaching our students to make any attempt to subdue an armed intruder outside of their secure area. However, we will provide them with options that can be applied if faced with a life or death situation to enhance their chances for survival.
The drills in all the buildings will focus on age appropriate strategies and content. We will never conduct unsafe or surprise training or drills with students of any age. We will provide students with the knowledge that if faced with a critical situation, there are methods that can be applied that greatly enhance their chances of not being harmed.
If you do not want your child to participate in the drill scheduled for October 25, please contact your student’s building principal by Tuesday, October 23. If you have questions about the active intruder drill, please contact the building principal.
